Mikhail (Ralph Fiennes), a gentle intellectual, is hopelessly in love with the married Natalya (Anna Astrakhantseva). She in turn longs for her son’s young tutor Aleksei (Nikita Volkov), but faces competition from her 17-year-old ward Vera (Anna Levanova).
