Like Someone in Love

12 rating

Abbas Kiarostami’s excursion into Japanese filmmaking is a masterly study of duplicity and role play centred around a student and her double life as an escort.

A student who hides her double life as an escort from her boyfriend has to pretend that one of her elderly clients is her grandfather, leading to a an increasingly convoluted exercise in role-play and conceit.

Itinerant Iranian traveller Abbas Kiarostami journeyed to Japan to mount this masterly study of identity and relationships, in which the Toyko nightscape is memorably captured in all its pristine neon beauty.
