The Passenger

15 rating

Jack Nicholson is at his best in Michelangelo Antonioni’s tale of a burnt-out political correspondent swapping identities with a dead man.

Disenchanted by his work, a political correspondent exchanges identities with a passing acquaintance he finds dead in an African hotel room – knowing little about him, so that his ‘new life’ is circumscribed by uncertainty.

Antonioni’s last great film boasts a typically eloquent use of landscape and architecture, while Nicholson gives one of his finest performances as the burnt-out protagonist on the run from… himself?
