Chantal Akerman’s debut is an incendiary critique of domesticity and conformity, the title of which translates as Blow up My Town. Playing a Chaplinesque young woman, Akerman shuts herself away in a small kitchen where she goes about various chores such as cleaning, mopping and polishing her shoes in an increasingly erratic fashion, before descending into mania and ending it all with a gas hob.
