John Maclean’s follow-up to Slow West, an idiosyncratic western, offers a windswept interpretation of the Samurai genre.
Set in rural 18th-century Scotland, it centres around a travelling puppet show and a young dancer (Kôki, playing the Tornado of the title) and her impresario father (Hira) as they encounter a local gang with both a flair and a thirst for violence. Roth and Lowden are both terrific, but the real stars of the show are Robbie Ryan's fluid cinematography and Maclean's eye for originality and pitch-black humour.
