Chris Mason Johnson’s wonderfully evocative period drama explores the telling details of gay life in San Francisco in 1985. Frankie is a young performer in a modern dance troupe and is constantly berated by his coach to ‘dance like a man’. This mild homophobia is indicative of the emerging panic over HIV, but when Frankie has the chance to take the test himself it brings with it a host of issues.

This is a sensitive and compelling account of a historical moment leavened with a compulsive soundtrack of ‘80s classics and a series of great dance pieces.
