This deeply intimate portrait of an Argentine football club is a forensic, fetishistic expose of soccer’s clandestine dressing-room culture.
This deeply intimate look behind the scenes of a professional football club in Argentina closely examines its athletic subjects to become a forensic, fetishistic expose of soccer’s clandestine dressing-room culture.
Director Martin Farina was granted unprecedented access to lower-league Argentinian club Atlético Platense by his brother Tomas, who’s just joined the team. The players soon become all-too-aware that Martin has a voyeuristic, homoerotic interest in capturing the naked truths of the shower rooms, and tensions soon emerge between subjects and filmmaker. Yet Farina readily and playfully emphasises the conflict between his declared interests and the contradictory motives suggested by his roving camerawork. The result is a strange and unique documentary – a kind of dialectic vérité – that also fascinates as an eye-opening insight into the psychology of the modern footballer.
