The rural idyll of a small village is blighted when vicious letters are sent to the inhabitants and the tension leads to suicide and murder before the culprit is exposed. Flora Robson plays the village matriarch supported by a magnificent cast, not least Robert Newton as an alcoholic ex-soldier.

The original play was penned by Richard Llewellyn, who later wrote How Green Was my Valley, some years before Henri-Georges Clouzot's similarly plotted French classic Le Corbeau reached the screens.
