At the tail of a Texan summer in 1980, a gang of wild college jocks enjoy three long days of freewheeling fun before school starts in earnest, encompassing a near endless stream of parties, sex and horseplay.

Richard Linklater has described the latest of his adolescent odysseys as a “spiritual sequel” to Dazed and Confused, picking up from that film’s late ‘70s high-school hijinks with a different set of characters. But it can also be seen as a successor to Boyhood, which ends on the day a teen stars college. Here, we follow the experience of freshman Jake (Blake Jenner) as he ingratiates himself with a rowdy set of new housemates and embarks on a hedonistic three-day voyage of discovery. As expected from Linklater, this is much more than a crass frat-boy comedy, imbued with the filmmaker’s sensitivity, sense for character and a typically breezy narrative flow that focuses as much on contemplative dialogue as its party set-pieces.
