Porn star Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried) finds herself abused by the industry and her maniacal husband– so she sets off to embrace feminism and, vitally, herself.
America, the 1970’s. The porn industry was expanding with business and at the centre of it was star Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried). After escaping her overbearing parents, she falls in love with Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard), a suave stranger who introduces her to the world of porn. After starring in the cult film Deep Throat, Linda finds herself in the middle of national controversy and soon fights to leave Chuck – and find her identity as a modern, independent woman.
Filmmakers Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman bring history to life in this energetic yet melancholy story of a woman learning to love herself. Echoes of Boogie Nights resound, but Lovelace remains a deeply complex character study that transcends clichés and headlines. Amanda Seyfried gives one of her best performances to date as the real-life character with dimensions of childlike curiosity but also hidden strength.
