The Taste of Things

Tran Anh Hùng directs Juliette Binoche in this delicious culinary romance that leaves no crumbs. Winner of the best director award at Cannes.

Both passion and food simmer and smoulder in this gorgeous culinary romantic drama from Tran Anh Hùng, the award-winning director of The Scent of Green Papaya. In a warm and busy kitchen of a 19th-century French manor house, gourmet Dodin and his cook Eugénie prepare a lavish four-course meal. Together they have perfected their craft, working in a magical, almost wordless harmony. More than Dodin’s cook, Eugénie is his love, but she won’t marry him.

Tran Anh Hùng collected the Best Director award at Cannes for this sumptuous and sexy historical drama. And with good reason: The Taste of Things is a beautifully shot and mesmerising erotic feast of a film, with intensely rich sound design placing us in the heart of the kitchen. As Dodin and Eugénie, Benoît Magimel and Juliette Binoche have a delightful and sensuous chemistry, bringing us into the couple’s passion for cooking, itself an act of love.
