Une Histoire d'eau

Truffaut’s romantic fable is reworked by Jean-Luc Godard in this early short by two giants of the French New Wave.

François Truffaut’s short film about a woman’s trip to a flooded Paris was substantially reworked in the editing room by fellow French New Wave pioneer Jean-Luc Godard. Foreshadowing the pair’s later divergence of styles, Godard approaches the material with more experimentation, adding absurdist voiceovers that add tonal complexity to Truffaut’s more conventional outline.

The title is a playful pun on the infamous erotic novel Une histoire d'O.
