Ypres

Battle film made as a memorial to the dead of WWI, documenting events at Ypres using reconstructed and genuine footage.

Harry Bruce Woolfe was the man behind a series of battle reconstruction films produced in the 1920s by his company British Instructional. Starting in 1921 with the Battle of Jutland, he made one a year through the decade. They were released annually around Remembrance Day and were intended as filmic memorials to the dead of particular battles, mentioning specific regiments and individual Victoria Cross recipients.

This was the first of three titles directed by Walter Summers, which are the best structured of the battle films. With access to British Army troops and equipment he was able to give the film an authentic look, enhanced by the occasional piece of genuine footage, such as the King's visit to Belgium.
