Berlin and the Olympics, 1936

Bustling street scenes in the build-up to the 1936 Berlin Olympics and atmospheric shots of the opening ceremony.

Billowing Olympic flags and fluttering swastikas adorn the streets of Berlin above the crowds of pedestrians and abundant traffic in these beautifully captured - if unsettling - street scenes. At the Olympic stadium the crowds give Nazi salutes as Hitler's entourage arrives, before the athletes parade around the stadium in the opening ceremony.

These fascinating snapshots were captured by amateur filmmaker Joseph Vecchi.
