Defiance is in the air in this evocative newsreel footage of anti-fascist solidarity rallies, after the Battle of Cable Street
London’s streets filled with opponents to Mosley’s British Union of Fascism in the days following the Battle of Cable Street, which saw an estimated 300,000 people prevent the BUF from marching through the East End. This unedited newsreel footage shows communist groups galvanising support for the beleaguered Jewish community and the aftermath of the violence against Jews and their businesses in and around Cable Street. Look out for John McGovern of the Independent Labour Party urging the crowd to “stamp out fascism!”
