Cinematographic View of the Royal Albert Bridge (1901)
A view of the many sea-going vessels around Saltash and Plymouth.
Overview
Mitchell and Kenyon take their camera out to sea, filming views of the coastline and the mouth of the River Tamar teeming with vessels powered by oar, sail or steam. The Royal Naval College at Plymouth also appears. Anchored off-shore are some Nelson-era battleships, used by cadets for training purposes. Finally, we see the Royal Albert Bridge, built in 1859 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
This is one of the southernmost films in the Mitchell and Kenyon collection. The filmmakers travelled widely, visiting Scotland, Wales and Ireland as well as the North of England, but their surviving films suggest that they rarely ventured south of the Midlands.
