Behold Teesside Municipal Transport's Clean Air Bus - a silent and vibration-free bus powered by an experimental Rolls Royce liquid propane gas engine.
A successful solution to the rising cost of diesel fuel was FXG 870E, a unique and pioneering Daimler Fleetline bus neatly converted by Rolls-Royce to run on LPG, and promoted as the 'Clean air bus'. It's environmental advantages were clear, but an unexpected drawback was that it ran so quietly that drivers couldn't tell if it was running or not. This silent danger had a few encounters with pedestrians too, each claiming that they didn't hear it coming!
