Help for Russia

"Your money means death to Nazism": Bermondsey holds a great parade in aid of Russia during WWII.

Following Germany's declaration of war on Russia in June 1941, hundreds of people parade through the streets of Bermondsey to promote British-Soviet unity in the fight against Hitler. The Aid to Russia Fund - with Winston Churchill's wife Clementine as its chairman - was set up to support the Russian people. During the war about £8 million was raised which paid for blankets, warm clothing and medical supplies.
