The people of Hoylake and West Kirby welcome their returning hero Sergeant Cyril Gourley V.C. of the Royal Field Artillery.
A large crowd follows the procession honouring local hero Sergeant C. E Gourley V.C. The route beginning at Hoylake Town Hall, past the Hoylake Sailing Club on the promenade, by the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, the Children’s Convalescent home ending at the Public Hall, West Kirby. In West Kirby Sergeant Gourley stands with local dignitaries.
Sergeant C. E. Gourley was awarded Victoria Cross by HM King Georg V at Buckingham Palace 16 March 1918. The award was for conspicuous bravery when in command of a team of howitzers during the Battle of Cambrai in 1917.
