Teulu Owain Owain: Tywyn, Castell Powys, Morfa Bychan
The summer holiday starts with a traffic jam – in the rain - but things improve!
From the collection of:
Overview
At least towing a caravan you have somewhere to sit and play draughts when the traffic comes to a complete standsill! The Owain family’s holiday improves, with visits to Powis Castle and pony trekking for the boys on sunny days. During the break from school they also visit the beach at home – Tywyn – and that at Morfa Bychan, near Cricieth, where there is an ice-cream van. Footage shot by Owain Owain – nuclear scientist, teacher, artist, writer and political activist.
Born in Pwllheli, the son of a quarryman, Owain married Eira [Mary Louise Eira Owain, nee Lloyd], daughter of a Carmarthenshire farmer, in 1954. She was a primary teacher who continued her career, after 4 children [Geraint, Robin, Nia and Gwenllian], at schools in Corris, Llanegryn and Tywyn. Owain worked at Windscale (Sellafield) nuclear power plant from which he turned to teaching chemistry, art and maths at school and university level in London, Bala, Pwllheli, Bangor and Tywyn. He was the first full-time head of the Urdd Gobaith Cymru camp at Glan-llyn, deputy director of education in Gwynedd (1977-85) and designer of the logo for Cymdeithas Yr Iaith Gymraeg (the Welsh Language Society).
