Turn Out of the Winsford Fire Brigade (1901)

The streets of the Cheshire town are lined with spectators to see their fire brigade.

Fire brigades clearly appealed to Mitchell and Kenyon, offering a sense of drama beyond that of ordinary street scenes. In this carefully staged event, the horse-drawn engine trundles past the camera, but most spectators seem more fascinated by the presence of the camera itself. The top-hatted showman can be seen in the penultimate shot, no doubt encouraging the mass waving which closes the film.
