College Church May Procession

Middlesbrough’s Catholic children make their way to church to take part in their First Communion in the 1960s.

Dressed all in white a procession of young girls, including the filmmaker Maurice Brunton’s daughter, make their way through the grounds of Holy Name of Mary Roman Catholic church in Middlesbrough. Well-dressed boys who are also taking part in the sacrament of First Communion follow the girls inside. After the service, they reappear on the steps of the church and parade through the grounds for proud parents.
