Princess Louise at Liverpool (1906)

A bagpipe band marches in honour of Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, on her visit to Liverpool.

Princess Louise, fourth of Queen Victoria's five daughters, visited Liverpool on 27 September 1906 to unveil the Victoria Memorial in Derby Square. As ever, Mitchell and Kenyon's aim was to fill the frame with as many faces as possible, so the main focus of the film is the crowd, and the final shot showing the Princess getting into the carriage seems almost cursory.

The intimacy of this footage is characteristic of the films commissioned by Mitchell and Kenyon's frequent showman collaborator AD Thomas. The Scottish connection of the Princess's husband the Duke of Argyll accounts for the regimental parade of kilt-clad pipers.
