Black Vote

"There's been no active encouragement for black people to participate within the political structure of this country". A bleak picture of the lack of equality in Britain.

It is 1980, shortly after riots broke out in Bristol, and the political programme Left, Right and Centre asks why there are no black or Asian MPs in Britain. Gus William,s who stood for the Liberals at Nuneaton in 1979 (against the wishes of some of the local party), speaks powerfully about the uphill struggle for equality as does Bert Carless, Birmingham's first black councillor, who quotes from an illiterate and abusive letter he received when he started off in politics.
