Listen to the wonderfully clipped tones of the commentator and the attempt at wit by his companion and you'd swear that Harry Enfield's 90s creation Mr Cholmondley-Warner really was alive and well in the 30s.

This instructional film, one of a series of seven sponsored by the FA, could easily have been too dry, but the commentary and the sight of top players from West Bromwich Albion and Arsenal, such as Ted Drake and Jack Lambert, keeps you hooked. To confuse things, there was another series by the same name, ‘Association Football’, made in 1948, also sponsored by the Football Association.
