Scenes in Abington Park, Northampton (1902)

A camera pan through the park reveals teaming crowds and changing fashions in Edwardian hatwear.

It's rare in a Mitchell and Kenyon film for straw boaters, bowlers and top hats to outnumber flat caps, but this film shows some of Northampton's townspeople at leisure, resplendent in their Sunday best. The park had opened to the public in 1897, but it's clear that a public promenade was already very much in fashion. It's just possible to make out a bandstand performance in the background.
