Well Dressing in Derbyshire

A tradition that binds together form and content, Christian and pagan, artist and artisan, the distant past to the present and future, and the local to the universally human.

In an unidentified Derbyshire village, possibly Ashford, visitors flock to see the impressive well dressings, displayed here in marvellous Kodachrome colour. Adorned with inscriptions taken from the bible – `Faith Hath Made Thee Whole' – the bible stories, lovingly pieced together from nature’s store, reflect the church revival of the 1950s.
