Michael Shelton and his gold medal in wheelchair snooker are rightly celebrated by the mining community of Newstead.
"Despite his disability, Michael has struck gold": the commentary of this edition of Mining Review reveals much about people's attitudes to disability in the 1960s, clearly quite different from the portrayal of 'superhuman' Paralympians today. 1964 saw the second international Paralympics take place in Tokyo and was a good year for Team GB, who came second overall. Tokyo will host the Paralympics again in 2020.
Shelton can be seen playing for his gold in the film 1964 International Stoke Mandeville Games in Tokyo, 8th-12th November, also available on BFI Player.
