All Quiet on the Western Front
Lewis Milestone's pioneering, Oscar®-winning film is one of the most powerful films about the consequences of war
Director: Lewis Milestone
Overview
One of the most powerful films about the consequences of war, this Oscar®-winning film follows a group of German youths who eagerly go off to fight during World War I, but soon discover the horrible, soul-destructive realities of combat. Director Lewis Milestone pioneered sweeping battlefield shots through the use of crane-mounted cameras, capturing the sheer scale of the mud embankments, corpses and barbed wire, accurately exemplifying the bloody grist-mill that was trench warfare in World War I.
All Quiet on the Western Front won Oscars for Best Picture and for Milestone's direction, as well as nominations for Best Writer and Best Cinematography. Even today, All Quiet stands as a thought-provoking piece of cinema that remains as relevant and effective in its message and delivery as the day it was released.
