Overview
David Mackenzie has made a career crafting gritty British stories (Starred Up, Young Adam), but here he teams up with Sicario scribe Taylor Sheridan for a captivating and compelling Texan-set Western. Chris Pine and Ben Foster star as two brothers stripped of their ranch by Texas Midland Bank, and conspire to rob back the banks to pay for their reverse mortgage. After a series of heists, they capture the attention of the local retiring sheriff (Jeff Bridges) who feels he has one last case in him to solve. What ensues is a gripping cat-and-mouse game set amidst the West Texas desert with plenty of the insight and edge Mackenzie has brought to his previous films.
Nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Jeff Bridges), Hell or High Water is a visually arresting revival of the neo-Western genre. Mackenzie and Sheridan prove to be a dream team in building natural tension and constructing taut characterisation, with this three-hander being particularly well acted by Pine, Foster, and Bridges.
