In nineteenth-century London, fastidious Detective Inspector Kildare (Bill Nighy) investigates a series of grisly murders that have been attributed to a mythical, ancient creature by a hysterical public. In doing so he becomes enveloped in the fate of a music-hall actress, Elizabeth, (Olivia Cooke) who's on trial for murdering her husband. Believing that the unmasking of the Golem will prove Elizabeth's innocence, Kildare must eliminate all possibilities before Elizabeth feels the pull of the hangman's noose.

One of London's foremost chroniclers, Peter Ackroyd, provided the source novel (Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem) for Jane Goldman's intricate, wily screenplay, which its heavy focus on the character of Elizabeth and the privations and penury endured by women in Victorian London. While director Juan Carlos Medina (Painless) endows proceedings with an exquisite air of Gothic splendour, crafting a memorably rich and atmospheric horror-mystery.
