The End

A moving speculation on the future decline of Deaf culture

Ted Evan’s hugely moving and highly creative work applies documentary aesthetics to speculative-fictional subject matter in order to chart the imagined decline of Deaf culture over four decades. We follow four characters whose lives take different directions depending on whether or not they have embraced a treatment aimed at eradicating deafness. While Evans projects us into the future, he draws on a very contemporary discussion about the recognition of Deafness as a rich and unique identity.

This landmark film was produced through British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust’s short film initiative Zoom.
